Pilgrimage Cycling: Combining sport and faith in Pieria

The 2nd Pilgrimage Cycling Race on September 29 highlights the religious places of the region through cycling tourism.

The “2nd Pilgrimage Bike Race” will take place on Sunday, September 29, 2024, at 12 noon and is organized by the Holy Metropolis of Kitros, Katerinis and Platamonos, the Regional Unit of Pieria, the Municipality of Pydna-Kolindrou, the Pieria Tourism Development and Promotion Organization (POTAP) and the Sports-Cultural Triathlon Association “TRIAS”.

The organization is under the auspices of the Hellenic Tourism Organization.

Its purpose is to promote and get to know the places of worship and pilgrimage of the Holy Metropolis of Kitrou, Katerini and Platamonos, through sports and cycling.

The action will include a bicycle race starting from the Holy Church of Saints Peter and Paul of Aeginios, stops at Holy Churches of the Municipality of Pydna-Kolindros and finishing at the Holy Church of Saint George Makrygialos.

At the same time, at the finish point, the awarding of the “Bike friendly destination” certification label in Pieria will take place, as a culmination of the efforts that the Pieria Tourism Development and Promotion Organization (POTAP) has made to date for the development of cycling tourism in combination with various alternatives forms of tourism. The label certifies that a destination meets a series of pan-European accepted criteria that create a ‘cycling identity’ in the destination and make it easier for the tourist to use the bicycle during their vacation.

Anyone over the age of 15 can participate in the “2nd Pilgrimage Cycling Race”.

Young men and women between the ages of 15 and 18 should be accompanied by their parent or have with them during the activity a responsible statement of consent from their parent or guardian, validated through gov.gr.
